Keeping your feet in shape, through exercise and stretching, can help them to serve you better and longer. Before embarking on any exercise program, it’s a good idea to warm up a bit. Marching in place for a few minutes can be a great way to get ready for a few simple strengthening and range of motion exercises. To limber up your feet, sit in a straight chair, extend your leg, and make clockwise circles in the air 15-20 times. Reverse direction and repeat. Then change legs and repeat. To stretch your feet, stand with your feet together (You may wish to hold on to the back of the chair for balance). Lift the heel and gently curl your toes under so that the top of the toes touch the floor. Hold for about 20 seconds. This should stretch the top of the foot and ankle muscles. Repeat on the other foot. To help strengthen your ankles, sit with feet flat on the floor. Lift the left foot and slip a towel or exercise band under the ball of the foot. Extend the lift and use a towel, or band, for resistance as you mimic the motion of pressing on the accelerator of a car. Hold for a few seconds and repeat 10-15 times. Switch feet. For these and other beneficial foot and ankle exercises, please consult a podiatrist.
Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Yuen Podiatry PC. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Exercise for Your Feet
Exercise for your feet can help you gain strength, mobility and flexibility in your feet. They say that strengthening your feet can be just as rewarding as strengthening another part of the body. Your feet are very important, and we often forget about them in our daily tasks. But it is because of our feet that are we able to get going and do what we need to. For those of us fortunate enough to not have any foot problems, it is an important gesture to take care of them to ensure good health in the long run.
Some foot health exercises can include ankle pumps, tip-toeing, toe rises, lifting off the floor doing reps and sets, and flexing the toes. It is best to speak with Our doctors to determine an appropriate regimen for your needs. Everyone’s needs and bodies are different, and the activities required to maintain strength in the feet vary from individual to individual.
Once you get into a routine of doing regular exercise, you may notice a difference in your feet and how strong they may become.

Ankle sprains can occur when the foot twists or rolls abruptly, causing one or more ligaments of the ankle to stretch beyond their limit or even tear. When these ligaments become overly stretched or torn, the degree of damage varies, and the potential for long-term complications becomes apparent if the sprain is not treated appropriately. When ligaments and supporting tendons and muscles do not heal properly after an ankle sprain, they may be left in a weakened state, which can lead to chronic ankle pain, instability, and loss of flexibility. There is also more of a risk of future ankle sprains occurring. Regardless of how mild an ankle sprain may appear to be, it is suggested that the ankle be examined and treated by a podiatrist who can offer proper treatment options.
Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from Yuen Podiatry PC. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Symptoms
Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Ingrown toenails can be painful and can make wearing shoes or walking uncomfortable. Seek professional help if you believe you've developed an ingrown toenail and be treated safely.
A fungal infection of the toenails is medically referred to as onychomycosis. It can be unsightly as a result of the toenails becoming thick and yellowed, which are common symptoms of toenail fungus. It is considered to be a contagious infection and lives and thrives in warm and moist environments. These types of places can include public swimming pools, shower room floors, and locker rooms. It is advised to wear appropriate shoes while in these areas, in addition to refraining from sharing towels, shoes, and socks. These may be effective prevention methods, but it is also suggested to frequently wash and thoroughly dry the feet, as well as practice overall good hygiene. Toenail fungus can be difficult to treat and may take several months. If you have symptoms of this condition, it is strongly advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine the best treatment options for you.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.
Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.

During the propulsion (toe off) stage of walking, toes bear the weight of the body as your heels rise. During this process, the toes are supported by the long, fibrous plantar fascia ligament on the bottom of the foot that connects the toes with the heel. The plantar fascia also absorbs weight and support the toes and arch when running, jumping, and dancing. Repeated stress due to overuse, obesity, improper footwear, structural anomalies in the feet, and other factors can cause the plantar fascia to become irritated, torn, and inflamed. This is a painful condition known as plantar fasciitis. The pain felt with plantar fasciitis is typically at its worst in the morning when you first wake up and begin to take your first steps. Because it is the most common form of heel pain, podiatrists see plantar fasciitis patients regularly and have a variety of options to treat it. If you are having heel pain, make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam to get properly diagnosed and treated.
Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists from Yuen Podiatry PC. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?
How Can It Be Treated?
While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Stress fractures are bone breaks that happen more subtly than one would usually think of when imagining broken bones. They are caused by repetitive movement on or by a bone over time. These fractures can either be hairline fractures or total breaks. Common areas of the body for stress fractures to occur include the shin, thigh, pelvis, and feet. Anyone can be affected by stress fractures but they are most commonly seen in athletes, healthcare workers, and military personnel. Generally, this type of fracture is caused by overuse. While the body is constantly repairing itself, certain actions prevent the body from normal healing. Feet need ample time to rest and repair or one can be prone to fractures. Other possible causes of bone breaks include osteoporosis, wearing improper footwear (too tight, too high, or not supportive), misaligned bones or muscles, obesity, and using oral steroids. If you experience foot pain that is not going away in a reasonable time frame, visit a podiatrist to see if you have developed a stress fracture.
Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists from Yuen Podiatry PC. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep your pain free and on your feet.
Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle
Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use. The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.
What Are Stress Fractures?
Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:
Symptoms
Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.
