Facts About Corns on the Feet

Corns on the feet are hard thickened dots of skin caused by pressure and friction. Corns are small dots of toughened skin, with a tiny hard kernel inside of them. They are commonly found on the toes, largely as the result of wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. The toe rubs against the side or top of the shoe and a corn begins to form. Deformities, such as bunions and hammertoes, can contribute to the formation of a corn. Wearing high heels that compress the toes and cause extreme pressure may also be a factor. Corns will not go away on their own, especially if the condition that caused them is not removed. Treating a corn yourself is not recommended, as infections can develop. Seeing a podiatrist is highly suggested instead. The podiatrist can remove the hardened skin in a safe and sterile setting and prescribe custom orthotics depending on the cause of the corns.

Should My Child Wear Shoes at an Early Age?

Research has shown the average child takes approximately 20,000 steps per day, triggering the thought process for parents to choose the right shoes for their child. This can help to support and protect the child’s feet as they grow older. Many parents feel it is best if their child walks barefoot while indoors, which may  help to strengthen the feet. The toes can become stronger from gripping the floor, and this can positively affect balance. Some parents believe that foot and toe deformities can come from wearing shoes at an early age, and they may encourage their children to walk barefoot while indoors and outdoors. When the first shoes are purchased for protection against the outside elements, it is beneficial that the shoes are flexible, lightweight, and have a strong and stable structure. Children’s feet grow at an accelerated speed, and it is suggested that their feet are often measured, which can determine the correct shoe size. If you have questions about what type of shoes to buy for your child, please contact a podiatrist who can address any concerns you may have.

  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)

Can Heel Pain Be Prevented?

Heel pain and running are not compatible. It can be a runner’s worst nightmare, and it is beneficial to learn how to prevent heel pain from developing. It is believed that heel pain can happen from the heels enduring more pressure than they are prepared for, and this can be easily avoided when proper warm-ups and cool-downs are performed. Additionally, specific heel and calf stretches can make the entire leg stronger, and this can begin with the feet.  An effective heel stretch is done by standing on a step and lowering one heel at a time until a gentle pull is felt. Some patients find it helpful to perform toe yoga, which is done by keeping the heel stationary while lifting the toes off of the floor. Research has shown that heel pain may be linked to weakened foot muscles, and there are various stretches and exercises that can strengthen the feet. If you have heel pain, it is strongly urged that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can determine the cause, and offer you helpful treatment options.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Yuen Podiatry PC. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Various Ways to Break Your Toe

Many people experience severe pain when the pinky toe breaks, despite its small size. It can happen from stubbing it against a piece of furniture, or from dropping a heavy object on it. The symptoms that immediately follow a broken toe consist of bruising, swelling, and difficulty walking. The buddy taping method is an effective treatment method for mild fractures. This is done by taping the affected toe to the toe next to it, which generally provides the stability that is necessary for proper healing. In severe breaks, the bone may protrude from the skin, and surgery may have to be performed that can guide the bone back into its natural place. An X-ray is often done that can provide an accurate diagnosis, followed by a discussion of the proper treatment and recovery time. It is beneficial to elevate the affected foot as often as possible, and refraining from participating in sports activities may help to accelerate the healing. If you feel you have broken your toe, is it strongly advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can help you with the correct treatment process.

A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Yuen Podiatry PC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising on the skin and toenail
  • The inability to move the toe
  • Toe appears crooked or disfigured
  • Tingling or numbness in the toe

Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.

Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.
